| An excellent pre-War, scalloped braced small body Martin in mahogany and Adirondack spruce. This is an exceptionally fine instrument, built in only the third year of the model’s production and during Martin’s ’Golden era’ . It’s a well-proportioned, mid-sized mahogany guitar, measuring up only a little (1 1/2’ or 3.8cm) narrower than an OM or OOO across the body. It sits nice and low on your knee in a welcoming sort of way and has the bark of a much larger instrument. The construction is beautifully light but with a solid and distinctly precise feel to it - it has a rounded V profile neck mahogany neck and comfortable brazilian rosewood fingerboard. The old-style spoke shaved neck has a very individual feel about it, with a little more meat on it than the very modern mass-produced necks. There’s no clubbiness to it though and your hands tend to feel very supported while playing. Recently, there’s been a growing appreciation of mahogany ’concert’ instruments and particularly the original scallop-braced guitars: Various boutique makers have produced variations of the early 14 fret 0 models in recent times, but tonally, there’s no substitute for genuine age. This pre-War instrument has a honeyed-gold glow to its spruce top and being pre-1946, it’s of the prized Adirondack variety, rather than the sitka that Martin have used so extensively postwar.
